Well this weekend was supposed to be an awesome hiking trip to Linville Gorge near Linville Falls, NC. Supposed to... is the keyword there. They forecasted horrendous lightning there in NC so we decided to stay closer to home at Jones Gap State Park. My boy Lance, Stud muffins Daniel and Luke, with newbie J Dirty (Jason) joined me for the boy's weekend in the woods.
To start the trip everyone was to meet at my house at 2, which I know one guy wouldn't get there until 230 but that would push everyone to get there on time. Everyone gets there except J Dirty and when he does arrive he shows up with a half packed book bag, like one you take to school, and no sleeping bag. He said he would just sleep on the ground. The contents of the bag were 6 10 ounce Powerades, 4 Beenie Weenies, Oatmeal Pies, and a few clothes. We had a good laugh and I let him borrow an old sleeping bag. Good laughs to start the trip. Well we got to Jones Gap and started our mile hike in with each of us, except J Dirty, carrying somewhere around 50 pounds each. Well we setup camp and have share some great stories. Which is awesome to do because you get to know people so well and enjoy great stories and learn about peoples past and what makes them who they are. We had a lot of great stories about our wives!!!
The next morning we woke to rain and got up around 10 and had breakfast and got to hiking. We had to get 2.5 miles to our next camp site where would drop off the packs, setup camp and our fire for the night, and have some lunch. Then we are on the trail again talking and having some fun. For those familiar with Jones Gap or Ceasar's Head State Parks we hiked the Rim of the Gap, which for those who are not is a trail around the park directly along a ridge and has amazing look overs and tough hiking. It was great and at the end of the day I calculated 11 miles hiked after lunch! The reason it is calculated is because we got off the trail and did some intense hiking down the side of the mountain to short cut some of the long and boring trail. This added to the days hike because it was very challenging staying on your feet and trying not to laugh at the others falling on their bums! When we got back and washed up in the river running by our campsite, J Dirty ate a little something and then went to sleep! He was out COLD!!! He didn't wake up until it was 30 degrees outside. Which I think woke everyone up! We weren't prepared for that after a 70 degree day.
So Luke decides to get up and burn all of the fire wood because he couldn't sleep! I called him a punk and Lance and I stayed in our bags trying to sleep. Everyone else started getting up and eating breakfast while Lance and I continued to try and rest. The sun was fully up so I decided to go ahead and get up. The only funny thing this morning was Daniel's mangina. You will have to ask him what that is. Anyway, I hope to have pictures of all of this from my boys when they email them or get them developed.
The weather was rough at times but we had a blast and enjoyed our times together in nature. God blessed us greatly with what we were able to do. For my training I feel my legs and they are very sore today. I will chalk this as a long run and small bike! Had a blast and can't wait to go out again!
